The new tile interface in Windows 8 has its fans, but if you don’t like it then it’s possible to completely get rid of it as of Windows 8.1.<\/p>\n

Part I: Upgrading Windows 8.0 to 8.1<\/b><\/p>\n

Step 1.<\/b> Go to the Windows Store<\/b> in the tile menu; a Windows 8.1 upgrade tile should appear.<\/p>\n

Step 2.<\/b> If the tile doesn’t appear, install this update<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Step 3.<\/b> Return to the Store in the tile menu and install the Win 8.1 upgrade.<\/p>\n

Part II: Once you’re running Windows 8.1<\/b><\/p>\n

Step 1.<\/b> Right-click on the taskbar and choose Properties<\/b> > Navigation<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Step 2.<\/b> To enable booting to desktop, uncheck everything in the top pane<\/b> and check everything in the bottom pane<\/b>:

Step 3.<\/b> Next, to restore the traditional Start Menu, install the Classic Shell<\/a> utility.<\/p>\n

Step 4.<\/b> Right-click the Start Button and choose Settings<\/b>. In the Start Menu Settings<\/b> tab, click Aero<\/b> and Windows 7 style<\/b> to get the familiar Win7 layout. Or customize to taste.<\/p>\n

Step 5.<\/b> If the Start Button shows the Classic Shell logo, uncheck Replace Start Button<\/b> to return to the regular Windows logo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
